Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art, based on ancient samurai techniques. It is non-competitive and purely defensive. Students learn about aspects of self-defence and achieve increased self-respect, discipline, confidence and focus. The sessions are game based in order to enhance teamwork skills, co-ordination and fitness. In addition to this, incentives have been introduced during the lesson to promote good behaviour. These include badges and chore cheques, which encourages children to behave well at home.

Art club

Art club is a weekly club open to all abilities and the aim is to offer children a variety of creative experiences. The projects vary in length depending on topic and materials used The longer topics always begin with the study of an artist or style. Here are a few examples of the projects covered this year: clay, life drawing, and mono printing. The art club is a small group as each project requires a lot of support and management.

Choir

The Choir is open to all children on Tuesdays from 3.15 - 4.00pm in the school hall. It is taken by Mrs. Buckley and Mrs. Strong. The children learn a variety of songs and often perform in and out of school concerts throughout the year. Occasionally the choir work with other creative clubs such as Drumming and Dramarama when working towards a particular performance.

Football - Boys

The boys after-school football club gives children the opportunity to learn new skills and to take part in inter-school matches and tournaments. The club takes place on Thursdays from 3.30 - 4.30 and is run by Mr. Dean.

Gymnastics

Last year almost a quarter of the school were doing gymnastics in our Monday, Friday and Tuesday lunchtime clubs and the standard of gymnastics in our school has improved year upon year. We successfully took gold in
the U11 and bronze in the U9 girls categories at the Devon School Floor and Vault Championships in Exeter in March 2006. This is added to a string of medal positions and team placings (including gold) in previous years at this competition.

We also competed in the North Devon Floor and Vault Championships in Bideford, with well over 300 gymnasts. Again our gymnasts did exeptionally well securing team silver in the U11 and bronze in the U9 categories. Last year our girls U9 team won gold. Our only boy gymnast secured individual silver.

Training for events and the quest for BAGA certificates and badges means the coaches are worked as hard as the children! A great big thanks goes to Mr Hughes and Mr Woodcock who helped run these clubs.

Storytelling and Roleplaying

Storytelling and Roleplaying is run by Mr Chapman, an established author in the field. The children are engaged in cooperative, group storytelling, relying strongly on, and developing, elements of quick thinking, communication skills,
confidence and imagination. By placing themselves in the roles of distinct characters in unusual fictional settings, they learn the value of other viewpoints and the consequences of actions and decisions, acting and reacting to develop the story as the weeks progress. In order to represent the vagaries of luck and skill, mechanistic game elements are also used, encouraging the development of basic arithmetical skills, while the creation of a distinct character relies on skills inherent in Literacy.

Tag Rugby

2006 was an excellent year; having won a number of matches against other schools we entered the Bideford Tag Rugby Festival and got through to the final of a 20 school tournament. Here our A team faced last years winners, and festival organisers, West Croft; meanwhile our B team got to the quarter finals and were knocked out - we were the only school to get 2 teams through to the knock-out part of the competition, showing the high standard to which both teams played. In a nail biting final match Ilfracombe stole glory by 1 try to take the festival trophy.

Later in the summer term we entered the Barnstaple Festival and successfully got through to the quaters were we met our old rivals Brauntan Caen - they narrowly beat us! However, our B team got through to the final of the shield tournament only to be beaten by the West Croft A team who were looking for revenge on their previous defeat!

This has been an excellent Tag Rugby Club with all our pupils playing to a high standard and behaving like great sportsmen and women.
