School Vegetable Garden
Our School Organic Vegetable Garden began in August 2005 with a group of Year 6 children putting in a bid to the Wallace and Grommit Competition to create a School Vegetable Garden. They received a runners up prize, and thanks to the hard work of Chris Curtis and Phil Stroud an area at the back of school was rotovated and created.
The children began sowing and planting in Spring 2006, and ever since have been growing vegetables for our kitchens to use in school dinners.
A substantial Greenhouse was donated in the summer term thanks to Wendy Merchant’s swimmers at the Rotary club swimathon, which has increased our effectiveness in growing tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, and acting as a large cold frame in the winter preparing seeds for planting when the weather warms up.
An orchard of fruit trees was planted between Easter 2007 and Easter 2008, with traditional North Devon variety apple (cooking and dessert), plum, cherry, pear, apricot and cherry trees.
Spring 2008 also sees the vegetable garden extend to allotments at Calf Green.
