Looking at Printing Techniques

In Year 5 we have been looking at Printing as part of our new art topic. We have already looked at two artists who use printing techniques to create detailed designs in their artwork. Katsushika Hokusai, who has created his Great Wave artwork through woodblock printing and William Morris, who has printed his wallpaper designs using different blocks that built up to create a more detailed final print.

We have then used clay to create two different types of printing tiles with seashore and coastal designs on. The first tile we looked at was an imprint tile where we scratched out our designs into the surface of the clay to reveal an image. We then looked at creating a relief tile where instead of scratching a design onto the surface of the tile, we added clay to create a 3D image that would leave gaps around the outside of the clay that we had stuck on!
