You might find the following information useful to help explain to your child why people have been protesting around the world in support of racial equality. We explore themes of equality and diversity throughout our curriculum and collective worship sessions. You may want to watch the clips before showing them to your child to ensure you are happy with the content.
Tolerance
School Values – Hope, Wisdom, Community and Dignity
What is tolerance? Tolerance is the willingness to accept people whose race, religion, opinions, or habits are different from one's own.
What is happening in the world at the moment?
This situation has highlighted that people are sometimes treating different or unfairly, in this case depending on the colour of their skin. This is not the only situation where people are treated unfairly or differently. Can you think of any? (men and women used to be treated very differently, rich and poor etc)
Discuss what they have seen in the video. Was it fair? How do you think the people felt? Should people have more of a chance than others?
What does the Bible say about how we should treat each other?
1 John 3 v 17-18
Suppose a believer is rich enough to have all that he needs. He sees his brother in Christ who is poor and does not have what he needs. What if the believer does not help the poor brother? Then the believer does not have God’s love in his heart. My children, our love should not be only words and talk. Our love must be true love. And we should show that love by what we do.
John 13 v 34 – 35
“I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. 35 All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.”
Luke 6:31 International Children’s Bible (ICB)
Do for other people what you want them to do for you.
So what can we do to change the world? We can make sure that the way we treat one another is equal and fair and have hope that our actions will influence others to do the same.
Discuss our school values and how they fit into this situation.
Prayer
Dear Lord
Thank for teaching us through the Bible and how Jesus lived his life, that we should respect and care for one another.
We are sorry for times when we have thought more of ourselves and less about others.
Please bring peace to places where there is unrest and where people are hurting due to being treating unfairly.
Help us to remember to treat others the way we would want to be treated.
Amen
