Year 5 Focus on Litter

Year 5 have been focusing on the significant geographical impact that litter, especially plastic, has on our oceans. Over the course of our unit, we have used maps and atlases to locate countries that produce most of the worlds plastic. We have discovered that there are vast garbage patches floating within our oceans and we used our rivers and ocean process knowledge to work out where litter could end up. We debated and discussed how we could aid the problem by reducing the amount of plastic we produce by using other materials such as bamboo or more effective ways of recycling to avoid this litter ending up in our oceans. Once we had made our educated conclusions, we wrote letters to our local politicians explaining the problems and even suggested a few solutions.
