Yr 4 Transported to Ancient Greece

In history over the last term, we were transported to Ancient Greece. We learned all about how the Ancient states were run in different ways - Spartans were all for creating fearsome soldiers whereas Athens was more focused on thinking deeply and studying the arts. We discovered that the Olympics were created as a way to even stop wars and that they were for men only and women couldn't even watch! It was in Ancient Greece that democracy was first created as a fair way for all the people to have a say. We later discovered that it may not have been that fair because children, women foreigners and slaves could not vote.

We debated what was the greatest Ancient Greek legacy out of the Olympics or Democracy which led up to our final debate on what is a better way to run a country -as a Democracy or as a Monarchy. We used our previous knowledge of ancient Egyptian pharaohs to help us to provide evidence on which was or still is a better way to rule.

What do you think? Is a Democracy or a Monarchy a better way to run the country?
